Governing Body

The question we are most commonly asked is ‘What do Governors do?’ The School Committee is responsible for ensuring our school provides good quality education, promoting high standards of academic achievement but also helping ensure that the school is a safe and happy place for our pupils and staff.

Governors are often described as the school’s ‘Critical Friend’ and this is part of our ‘job’, but the School Committee also is accountable for the performance of the school to parents and the wider community. We focus on three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Senior Leadership Team to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Engaging with pupils, staff, parents and the wider community so that governors have a deep knowledge of the school and take all views into account.

Governors work together with the Senior Leadership Team, to ensure the best possible education for all the children in our school, including those with special needs enabling them to realise and achieve their potential at each and every stage of their time with us in accordance with our Vision.

Some Governors also take on more defined areas of responsibility linked to identified areas. This could be a relatively broad  remit e.g. Special Educational Needs or Health & Safety or linked to a specific School Development Priority where aims and objectives are agreed and monitored closely. Governors visit the school regularly, undertaking learning walks, talking to staff and children. They report back to the School Committee on the progress they have seen. The School Committee takes a strategic role and is accountable for its decisions as defined by the GMAT’s Scheme of Delegation. It also reviews, agrees and monitors policies, targets and priorities specific the school.
