Reception at Horley Infant School…
At Horley Infant School our children in Reception are taught using the 2021 Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The Framework is comprised of seven areas of learning which all link with one another. These areas of learning are known as the Prime and Specific areas.
The Prime areas are:
• communication and language
• physical development
• personal, social and emotional development
The Specific areas are:
• literacy
• mathematics
• understanding the world
• expressive arts and design

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is important in its own right and also for preparing children for later schooling. At Horley Infant School, we strive to meet every child’s entitlement to develop and maintain a love of learning that will enable them to have the best possible future life chances. Children’s experiences in the early years have a major impact on future life chances.
At Horley Infant School, our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our children to become confident and happy members of society. Our vision for our Early Years provision is to provide a holistic approach in an environment, which ignites children’s curiosity for the world around them. Our children will be provided with knowledge and skills to make learning irresistible. We aim to provide each child with an individual, positive learning experience in a nurturing, safe, enjoyable and respectful learning environment in order to become successful, confident lifelong learners.
In the Early Years, play is extremely important for children to learn and develop. Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, solve problems and relate to others. Children learn best when given time to play and explore learning opportunities for themselves. Following this principal, children at Horley Infant School have the opportunity to explore all areas of learning in both the inside and outside provision. Children have access to this all year round to support their next steps and new learning.
To achieve this, we embed our Early Years skills and knowledge into a vast range of child centred learning opportunities and contexts. Through whole class teaching we plan and deliver learning opportunities for English, Mathematics and Phonics. Our teaching team use their knowledge and experience to continually observe children’s learning and development and adapt the learning environment to reflect the needs and interests of our children.

In the Early Years environment at Horley Infant School, we capture the children’s current interests and curiosity that particular time. By listening to our children and following their lead based on what children are exploring at the time, our Early Years practitioners interact with the children and build upon what they are already doing. Through meaningful observations and interactions with the children, adults know when and how to intervene in those crucial moments capturing and extending next steps there and then. We recognise parents’ views are essential when regularly identifying children’s individual interests and ensuring each child’s learning and developmental needs are met as individuals and therefore communication links with our parents and families are vital.
